UK Ends Visa Stickers: New Applicants Now Get an eVisa Only — From 1 July 2026

A traveller holds a passport and a smartphone displaying a digital UK immigration status screen at a bright airport arrivals hall with electronic passport gates in the background, illustrating that from 1 July 2026 UK Visas and Immigration issues successful new applicants a digital eVisa only instead of a visa vignette sticker in the passport.
From 1 July 2026, UK Visas and Immigration stopped issuing visa vignette stickers to successful new applicants. Every new UK visa — visit, work, study or family — is now issued as a digital eVisa, accessed through a UKVI account and linked to the traveller’s passport.

From 1 July 2026, UK Visas and Immigration stopped issuing visa vignette stickers to successful new applicants — every new UK visa, whether visit, work, study or family, is now issued as a digital eVisa only. OraVisa explains what UAE residents applying from Dubai and Abu Dhabi now need to do to view their permission and travel without a passport sticker.

What Changed on 1 July 2026

UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) has completed its move to a fully digital immigration system. From 1 July 2026, UKVI stopped issuing visa vignette stickers — the physical endorsement placed in a passport — to successful new applicants. Every new visa, whether for tourism, business, study, work or family, is now issued as an eVisa only: an online record of the holder’s immigration status, accessed through a UKVI account rather than printed in the passport.

The change is the final step of a phased rollout. From 25 February 2026, successful visit-visa applicants already stopped receiving a vignette and were issued an eVisa only; the 1 July 2026 update extends that to all remaining routes. The eVisa does not change who qualifies for a UK visa, what documents are required, or the fees — it changes only the format in which permission is granted and proven.

Key Facts

  • From 1 July 2026, successful new UK visa applicants receive an eVisa only — no visa vignette sticker is placed in the passport.
  • This applies across all routes: visit, business, study, work, family and settlement.
  • You must create and sign in to a UKVI account to view your eVisa and check your permission before you travel.
  • Your eVisa is linked to the passport registered in your UKVI account — keep it up to date, especially if you renew your passport.
  • Eligibility, document requirements and visa fees are unchanged — this is a format change, not a rule change.
  • An eVisa is NOT the same as a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA); the ETA is a separate scheme for visa-exempt nationalities such as Emirati passport holders.

What This Means for UAE Residents

The United Kingdom is one of the most popular destinations for UAE residents, and the large Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, Nigerian and Bangladeshi communities in the Emirates account for a substantial share of UK visa applications submitted from the Gulf. If you apply for a UK visa at a visa application centre in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, this change affects you directly.

In practice, you will no longer collect a passport with a visa sticker inside after a successful decision. Instead, your permission is issued as an eVisa that you view online through your UKVI account. Before flying, you sign in, confirm your eVisa and permission are correct, and ensure your current passport is linked. Carriers and Border Force verify your status digitally against the passport you travel on, so the passport linked to your UKVI account must be the one you carry.

It is important not to confuse the eVisa with the UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). The ETA is a separate requirement for nationalities that do not need a visa to visit the UK — including Emirati passport holders. If you hold a passport that requires a UK visa (such as an Indian, Pakistani or Filipino passport), you continue to apply for the visa as before; the only difference is that your approved visa is now an eVisa rather than a sticker.

What You Should Do Now

Once your UK visa application is successful, follow these steps before you travel:

Access and Use Your UK eVisa

  1. Create your UKVI account

Set up a UK Visas and Immigration account using an email address and phone number you can access each time you sign in, along with your passport and your visa application number (the GWF or UAN reference from your application).

  2. Link your current passport

Make sure the passport you will travel on is connected to your eVisa. If you renew or change your passport, update the details in your UKVI account so your eVisa remains linked to the document you carry.

  3. View your eVisa and check your permission before travel

Sign in ahead of your journey to confirm your eVisa is present and your permission (conditions and dates) is correct. Resolve any discrepancy before booking or flying.

  4. Generate a share code when you need to prove your status

Use the online “view and prove” service to create a share code for airlines, employers or other parties who need to confirm your immigration status.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do UK visas still come as a sticker in the passport?

No. From 1 July 2026, UK Visas and Immigration stopped issuing visa vignette stickers to successful new applicants. Every new UK visa — including visit, business, study, work and family visas — is now issued as a digital eVisa only, accessed through a UKVI account rather than printed in your passport.

Is a UK eVisa the same as a UK ETA?

No. An eVisa is the digital form of a UK visa for people who need one — it replaces the old passport sticker. A UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a separate scheme for nationalities that do not need a visa to visit the UK, such as Emirati passport holders. If your passport requires a UK visa, you apply for the visa as usual and receive an eVisa; you do not use the ETA route.

What must I do after my UK visa is approved?

Create and sign in to a UKVI account to access your eVisa, make sure your current passport is linked to it, and view your eVisa to check that your permission and conditions are correct before you travel. You will need an email address, a phone number and your visa application number (GWF or UAN) to set up the account.

Does the eVisa change my UK visa fees or eligibility?

No. The move to eVisas is a change in format only. Who qualifies for a UK visa, the documents you must provide, and the visa fees are all unchanged. The only difference is that your approved permission is now a digital eVisa instead of a sticker in your passport.

What happens if I get a new passport after my visa is issued?

Your eVisa is linked to the passport registered in your UKVI account. If you renew or change your passport, sign in to your UKVI account and update your passport details so your eVisa stays connected to the document you travel on. Travelling on a passport that is not linked to your eVisa can cause problems at check-in and the border.

Can I travel to the UK without setting up a UKVI account?

You should set up your UKVI account and check your eVisa before you travel. Because there is no longer a sticker in your passport, your eVisa in your UKVI account is how your permission is held and verified. Carriers and Border Force check your status digitally against the passport linked to your eVisa, so confirming everything is correct in advance is essential.
