UK ETA Now Mandatory for UAE Nationals Travelling to the United Kingdom
The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is mandatory for UAE nationals travelling to the United Kingdom — Emirati passport holders have needed an approved ETA since February 2024, and since 25 February 2026 the requirement is fully enforced at the border: carriers cannot board ETA-required passengers (by air, ferry, or train) without a valid ETA. The ETA costs GBP 20 and is valid for 2 years.
What Has Changed
UAE nationals have been required to hold an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to travel to the United Kingdom since February 2024, when the ETA scheme was extended to GCC nationals. Before that, Emirati passport holders could visit the UK for up to 6 months without any prior authorisation. Since 25 February 2026 this requirement is fully enforced at the border: carriers (airlines, ferry and train operators) cannot board ETA-required passengers who do not hold a valid ETA. You can still visit without a traditional visa, but you must apply for and receive an ETA before departure.

How to Apply for a UK ETA from Dubai
The UK ETA application is straightforward and fully digital. You do not need to visit any embassy, VFS centre, or submit physical documents. The entire process takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.
- 1Download the "UK ETA" app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, or visit the official gov.uk ETA page.
- 2Create an account and enter your personal details as they appear on your UAE (Emirati) passport.
- 3Upload a clear photo of your passport bio page using your phone camera.
- 4Take a selfie for facial verification — the app uses biometric matching.
- 5Pay the GBP 20 fee using a debit or credit card.
- 6You will receive a decision via email, usually within 3 working days. The ETA is digitally linked to your passport — no printout is needed.
Important Reminders for UAE Travellers
- Apply at least 1 week before your travel date to allow for processing.
- The ETA is linked to your passport number — if you get a new passport, you need a new ETA.
- You do not need to print anything. Airlines and UK Border Force check your ETA electronically.
- The ETA does not guarantee entry — UK Border Force retains the right to refuse entry at the border.
- Transit passengers passing through UK airports also need an ETA.
OraVisa Recommendation
If you are a UAE national planning to visit the UK for tourism, family visits, or business meetings, make sure you apply for your ETA well before your departure date. While the process is usually quick, delays can occur during peak travel periods. We also recommend checking that your passport has at least 6 months validity remaining from your planned UK arrival date.
For UAE residents who are not Emirati nationals (e.g., Indian, Pakistani, Filipino passport holders), the ETA does not apply to you — you still need a standard UK visa. OraVisa can help you prepare your UK visa application — including document preparation, guidance on booking your own VFS Global appointment, and application review.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do UAE nationals need a visa for the UK in 2026?
UAE nationals do not need a traditional visa for short visits to the UK. However, Emirati passport holders have needed a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling since February 2024, and since 25 February 2026 airlines cannot board ETA-required passengers without a valid ETA. The ETA costs GBP 20 and is valid for 2 years.
Has the UK ETA fee changed since launch?
Yes. The ETA fee has increased twice since the scheme launched: GBP 10 at launch on 1 February 2024, raised to GBP 16 on 9 April 2025, and raised again to GBP 20 on 8 April 2026. Fees are subject to further change; verify the current fee on GOV.UK before applying.
How long does a UK ETA take to process?
UK ETA applications are usually processed within 3 working days. We recommend applying at least 1 week before your planned travel date to allow for any delays.
Can I transit through the UK without a UK ETA?
No. UAE nationals transiting through UK airports also need an approved ETA, even if they are not leaving the airport. The ETA requirement has applied to GCC nationals since February 2024, and since 25 February 2026 carriers enforce it at boarding.
