UK eGates Now Open to Children Aged 8 and 9 — What UAE Families Need to Know (July 2026)

From Wednesday, 8 July 2026, the UK opens its automated eGates to children aged 8 and 9 — lowering the age threshold from 10 — provided they are at least 120 cm tall, accompanied by an adult, and hold a biometric passport from an eligible country. OraVisa explains why this change benefits some UAE-resident families but not Emirati nationals or holders of South Asian, Filipino, or Egyptian passports.

What Has Changed

On 14 May 2026, the UK Home Office announced that children aged 8 and 9 will be permitted to use the United Kingdom's automated passport eGates from Wednesday, 8 July 2026. Until now, the minimum age was 10, following an earlier 2024 expansion that lowered the threshold from 12 to 10. The change is part of the UK's broader push toward a "contactless border" using facial-comparison technology at more than 290 eGates across UK airports and juxtaposed ports such as Calais and Coquelles.

Quote from the UK Home Office

  • Mike Tapp, Minister for Migration and Citizenship: "Travel with young children can be stressful for parents. By expanding eGate access, more families can experience a swifter and smoother journey home."
  • Phil Douglas, Border Force Director General: "eGates are an essential part of keeping our border secure."

Who Is Eligible to Use UK eGates

The eGate age change does not alter the underlying nationality eligibility rules. To use a UK eGate, a traveller (adult or child) must hold a biometric passport from a country on the UK's eGate-eligible list. The list has not been expanded as part of this announcement.

Travellers whose nationality is not on the eligible list must continue to use staffed border desks regardless of age. The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), which became mandatory for UAE nationals on 26 February 2026, does not grant eGate access — Emirati passport holders still queue at manned desks even with a valid ETA.

What This Means for UAE Residents

The honest answer for most UAE families travelling to the UK this summer: the eGate expansion does not change your border experience. The majority of UAE-resident passport categories — including Emirati nationals and the four largest expat communities (Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Filipino) — remain outside the eGate-eligible list. UAE families in these categories will still process through staffed Border Force desks at Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, and Birmingham as before.

For the smaller group of UAE residents holding British, EU, American, Australian, Canadian, Singaporean, South Korean, Japanese, Swiss, or Scandinavian passports, this is genuinely useful news: a family of four travelling back to the UK after a holiday no longer needs to split — one parent through the eGate, the other queuing with the kids — provided every child is at least 120 cm tall and aged 8 or above. Border Force estimates the change will route around 1.5 million additional children through the faster automated lanes each year, which should also reduce wait times at the manned desks the rest of UAE travellers continue to use.

What You Should Do Now

  1. 1Check your child's passport nationality against the eligible list above. If the passport is not on the list, plan for staffed-desk processing as before.
  2. 2If your family qualifies, confirm each child is at least 120 cm tall before travel — height is checked at the gate camera. Many UK Border Force lanes display a height-check sticker on the gate.
  3. 3For Emirati nationals: ensure your UK ETA is still valid before travel. The ETA does not grant eGate access, but it is required for all visits and transits to the UK since 26 February 2026.
  4. 4For UAE residents on non-eligible passports (Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Filipino, Egyptian, etc.) travelling for tourism or family visits: continue applying for the UK Standard Visitor Visa via VFS Global Dubai. OraVisa can support document preparation and submission.

Background — UK Border Modernisation

The eGate age reduction is one piece of a wider UK border modernisation programme. The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme — which OraVisa covered when it became mandatory for UAE nationals in February 2026 — has now issued 24.8 million authorisations. The UK has stated its longer-term ambition is a "contactless border" in which facial-comparison technology removes the need for travellers to present a physical passport at the gate, while staffed desks remain available for those whose nationality, age, or circumstances require manual processing.

This update does not change UK visa requirements, visitor visa fees, or the ETA process. It is a procedural eGate expansion affecting only the age threshold for children of already-eligible nationalities.

Frequently Asked Questions

When can children aged 8 and 9 start using UK eGates?

From Wednesday, 8 July 2026. The UK Home Office announced the change on 14 May 2026. Children must be at least 120 cm (3 ft 11 in) tall, accompanied by an adult, and hold a biometric passport from an eGate-eligible country.

Can Emirati children aged 8 and 9 use UK eGates from July 2026?

No. The UAE is not on the UK's eGate-eligible nationality list. Emirati passport holders of any age continue to process through staffed Border Force desks, even with a valid UK ETA. The ETA is required for entry but does not grant eGate access.

Can Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, or Filipino children in UAE use UK eGates?

No. None of these passports are on the UK eGate-eligible list. UAE residents holding these passports must apply for a UK Standard Visitor Visa via VFS Global Dubai and clear immigration at staffed desks regardless of age.

Which passports can use UK eGates in 2026?

UK, EU (all 27 member states), Australia, Canada, Iceland, Japan, Liechtenstein, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland, and the United States. Members of the UK Registered Traveller Service from 30 additional countries are also eligible. All eGate users need a biometric passport.

Does my child need to be a specific height to use the UK eGate?

Yes. Children must be at least 120 cm (3 ft 11 in) tall so the eGate facial-comparison camera can capture an accurate image. Border Force lanes typically display a height-check indicator. Children below the height threshold must use staffed desks even if they meet the age requirement.

Does the eGate expansion change any UK visa or ETA rules for UAE residents?

No. This change only affects the age threshold for eGate use by already-eligible nationalities. UK Standard Visitor Visa requirements, fees, and processing routes remain unchanged. The UK ETA scheme for Emirati nationals (mandatory since 26 February 2026) is unaffected.
