ETIAS Launching Q4 2026 — Emiratis and Visa-Free Travellers Will Need Pre-Authorisation for Europe
The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is confirmed to launch in Q4 2026 (October–December). Once operational, nationals from approximately 60 visa-exempt countries — including the UAE, UK, Australia, USA, Canada, Japan, and South Korea — will need to obtain a €20 online pre-travel authorisation before entering any of the 30 ETIAS countries. ETIAS is NOT a visa — it is a pre-screening system similar to the US ESTA or UK ETA. Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, and other nationalities that already require a Schengen visa are NOT affected. OraVisa explains who needs ETIAS, how it works, the grace period timeline, and what UAE residents should do to prepare.
What Is ETIAS?
ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) is a new electronic pre-travel authorisation system for the European Union. It is designed for nationals of countries that currently enjoy visa-free access to the Schengen Area. ETIAS is not a visa — it is a pre-screening system similar to the US ESTA or UK ETA.
The system was adopted under EU Regulation 2018/1240 as part of the Smart Borders Package. It is the companion system to the Entry/Exit System (EES), which went live on 10 April 2026. Together, EES and ETIAS replace the old passport stamp system with digital border management across Europe.
ETIAS at a Glance
- Cost: €20 per application (free for under 18 and over 70)
- Validity: 3 years or until passport expires, whichever is first
- Processing: 95% of applications approved within minutes
- Covers: Tourism, business, and transit — NOT work or study
- Required for: ~60 nationalities that currently enter Schengen visa-free
- NOT required for: Nationalities that already need a Schengen visa (Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, etc.)
- Countries covered: 30 European countries (29 Schengen + Cyprus)
When Does ETIAS Launch?
The European Commission confirmed on 6 March 2025 that ETIAS will launch in the last quarter of 2026 (Q4 — October to December). The exact date has not yet been announced and depends on European Parliament approval and member state readiness. The Commission has said it will announce the specific start date several months in advance.
Critically, ETIAS will not be strictly enforced from day one. There is a two-phase grace period after launch.
ETIAS Implementation Timeline
| Phase | Estimated Period | What Happens |
|---|---|---|
| Launch | Q4 2026 (Oct–Dec) | ETIAS system goes live. Applications open. |
| Transitional period (6 months) | Q4 2026 – Q2 2027 | All travellers may enter without ETIAS, provided other entry requirements are met. ETIAS is available but optional. |
| Grace period (6 months) | Q2 2027 – Q4 2027 | First-time visitors can still enter without ETIAS. Returning visitors (who entered during the transitional period) must have ETIAS. |
| Full enforcement | From ~Q4 2027 | ETIAS is mandatory for all visa-exempt travellers. No exceptions. |

Who Needs ETIAS?
ETIAS is required for citizens of approximately 60 countries and territories that currently enjoy visa-free access to the Schengen Area. If your nationality currently allows you to enter Europe without a visa, you will need ETIAS once the system is enforced.
Key nationalities that WILL need ETIAS include: UAE (Emirati), United Kingdom, United States, Australia, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Israel, New Zealand, Colombia, Peru, Georgia, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, North Macedonia, Moldova, and Ukraine.
Nationalities that will NOT need ETIAS (because they already need a Schengen visa): India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Philippines, Egypt, Nigeria, Iran, China, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and all other nationalities that currently require a Schengen visa. ETIAS only applies to visa-exempt travellers.
How to Apply for ETIAS
ETIAS applications will be submitted entirely online — there is no embassy visit, no appointment, and no paper documents to submit. The process is designed to take under 10 minutes.
- 1Visit the official ETIAS website or download the ETIAS mobile app (details to be announced closer to launch).
- 2Fill in your personal details: name, date of birth, nationality, passport information.
- 3Answer background questions on health conditions, criminal history, and previous immigration issues.
- 4Upload a digital photo (passport-style) and provide biometric data as required.
- 5Specify your EU member state of first entry.
- 6Pay the €20 fee by credit or debit card (free for under 18 and over 70).
- 7Receive your decision — 95% of applications are approved within minutes. Complex cases may take up to 96 hours, or up to 4 weeks if additional documentation is requested.
Once approved, your ETIAS authorisation is linked digitally to your passport. You do not need to print anything — airlines and border agents will verify your ETIAS status electronically.

For Emirati nationals and Western expats in the UAE, ETIAS adds a small cost (€20 / ~AED 80) and a brief online application to what is currently a passport-only entry process. It does not change visa-free status — it adds a pre-screening layer. For the majority of UAE residents (Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Bangladeshi), nothing changes — you continue to apply for a Schengen visa through VFS as normal.

What You Should Do Now
- 1Check if your nationality is on the ETIAS list. If you currently enter Schengen countries visa-free, you will need ETIAS from Q4 2026.
- 2If you need a Schengen visa (Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, etc.), ETIAS does not affect you. Continue applying for your visa as normal.
- 3Emirati nationals: plan to apply for ETIAS as soon as the system opens. The application takes minutes and the €20 fee covers 3 years of travel.
- 4British and Australian expats in the UAE: you will need both ETIAS (pre-travel) and EES biometric registration (at the border). Budget an extra €20 and allow more time at airports.
- 5Ensure your passport has at least 3 months validity beyond your planned departure from Europe and was issued within the last 10 years.
- 6Monitor official EU announcements for the exact launch date — the Commission will confirm several months in advance.
- 7Use our free Schengen 90/180 Day Calculator at oravisa.com/tools/schengen-calculator/ to track your remaining days.
Need a Schengen Visa? ETIAS Doesn't Apply to You

Frequently Asked Questions
What is ETIAS and when does it start?
ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) is a new pre-travel authorisation for visa-exempt travellers visiting Europe. It launches in Q4 2026 (October–December). It is not a visa — it is a pre-screening system similar to the US ESTA or UK ETA. It costs €20, is valid for 3 years, and 95% of applications are approved within minutes.
Do Indian passport holders need ETIAS?
No. ETIAS is only for nationalities that currently enter the Schengen Area without a visa. Indian passport holders already require a Schengen visa, so ETIAS does not apply to them. The same applies to Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Filipino, Egyptian, Nigerian, and all other nationalities that need a Schengen visa.
Do UAE nationals (Emiratis) need ETIAS?
Yes. Emirati passport holders currently enjoy visa-free access to the Schengen Area. Once ETIAS launches, they will need to obtain a €20 online authorisation before travelling to Europe. Visa-free access continues — ETIAS simply adds a pre-screening step. The application takes minutes and is valid for 3 years.
How much does ETIAS cost?
ETIAS costs €20 (approximately AED 80) per application. It is free for travellers under 18 and over 70 years old. The authorisation is valid for 3 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. Compare this to a Schengen visa which costs €90 and requires a full application process.
What is the difference between EES and ETIAS?
EES (Entry/Exit System) is the biometric border check system that went live on 10 April 2026 — it records your fingerprints and facial image when you cross a Schengen border. ETIAS is a pre-travel authorisation you must obtain before your trip. EES applies to ALL non-EU travellers at the border. ETIAS applies only to visa-exempt nationalities before departure. Both systems work together as part of the EU Smart Borders Package.
Will ETIAS be mandatory immediately when it launches?
No. There is a 6-month transitional period after launch where travellers can enter without ETIAS, followed by a 6-month grace period where only returning visitors need it. Full enforcement is expected approximately 12 months after launch (around Q4 2027). However, OraVisa recommends applying as soon as the system opens to avoid any issues.
