Japan Raises Visa Fees Fivefold from 1 July 2026 — What UAE Residents Need to Know

From 1 July 2026, Japan is raising visa issuance fees about fivefold — single-entry from JPY 3,000 to 15,000 and multiple-entry from JPY 6,000 to 30,000 — for applications submitted on or after that date. UAE residents who need a Japan visa pay the higher fee; Emirati nationals remain visa-exempt. OraVisa explains who is affected and how to act before the increase.
What Has Changed
On 19 June 2026, the Japanese government approved a revision of the cabinet order that sets visa issuance fees — the first increase in 48 years, since 1978. From 1 July 2026, the fees rise roughly fivefold. The new amounts apply to applications submitted on or after that date, and the fee is paid at the Japanese embassy or consulate when the visa is issued.
Japan Visa Issuance Fees — Before vs From 1 July 2026
| Visa type | Until 30 June 2026 | From 1 July 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Single-entry visa | JPY 3,000 | JPY 15,000 |
| Multiple-entry visa | JPY 6,000 | JPY 30,000 |
| Transit visa | JPY 700 | Not officially confirmed — the cabinet order named single- and multiple-entry visas |
Single-entry visa
- Until 30 June 2026
- JPY 3,000
- From 1 July 2026
- JPY 15,000
Multiple-entry visa
- Until 30 June 2026
- JPY 6,000

Transit visa
- Until 30 June 2026
- JPY 700
- From 1 July 2026
- Not officially confirmed — the cabinet order named single- and multiple-entry visas
Fees are set by the Government of Japan and payable on issuance. Visa-exempt nationalities remain exempt and pay no issuance fee.
What This Means for UAE Residents
Whether the increase affects you depends on your passport nationality, not your UAE residence. Japan is a popular holiday and business destination from Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and most UAE-resident expatriate nationalities need a visa to enter.
Emirati passport holders are not affected. Since 2022, UAE nationals have enjoyed a short-stay visa waiver for Japan — extended from 30 to 90 days from 1 July 2025 — provided they hold an ICAO-compliant biometric passport and complete the one-time passport pre-registration at a Japanese diplomatic mission before travel. Because no visa is issued, there is no issuance fee.
UAE residents on visa-requiring passports — including Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Bangladeshi, Egyptian and most other nationalities — will pay the new, higher fee on any application submitted from 1 July 2026. The increase adds up quickly for families: four single-entry visas rise from JPY 12,000 to JPY 60,000 in government fees alone.
What You Should Do Now
- 1If your Japan trip is coming up, apply before 1 July 2026 — the higher fee applies only to applications submitted on or after that date, so an earlier application is charged the current lower fee.
- 2If you apply on or after 1 July, budget for the new fee: JPY 15,000 for a single-entry visa or JPY 30,000 for a multiple-entry visa, payable when the visa is issued.
- 3If you travel to Japan often, weigh a multiple-entry visa against repeated single-entry applications — one multiple-entry visa may be better value over time.
- 4Emirati nationals: confirm your one-time passport pre-registration is complete before you fly. No visa and no fee are required for stays of up to 90 days.
- 5Prepare a complete, well-documented application. A higher fee does not change the documentary requirements, and a refused application means paying the fee again on reapplication.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much is a Japan visa from Dubai after 1 July 2026?
From 1 July 2026, the issuance fee is JPY 15,000 for a single-entry visa and JPY 30,000 for a multiple-entry visa (up from JPY 3,000 and JPY 6,000). The fee is paid at the Japanese embassy or consulate when the visa is issued.
When does the Japan visa fee increase take effect?
It takes effect on 1 July 2026 and applies to applications submitted on or after that date. If you apply before 1 July 2026, your application is charged the current, lower fee.
Do Emirati nationals have to pay the new Japan visa fee?
No. Emirati passport holders are visa-exempt for short stays of up to 90 days, provided they hold an ICAO-compliant biometric passport and complete the one-time passport pre-registration at a Japanese mission before travel. Because no visa is issued, there is no fee.
Does the increase affect Indian, Pakistani or Filipino passport holders in the UAE?
Yes. Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Bangladeshi, Egyptian and most other nationalities resident in the UAE need a visa for Japan and will pay the higher fee on any application submitted from 1 July 2026.
Is the Japan transit visa fee also increasing?
The cabinet order announced increases for single-entry and multiple-entry visas. A new transit-visa figure has not been officially confirmed (the previous transit fee was JPY 700). Check with the Japanese embassy or consulate at the time of application.
Why is Japan raising visa fees?
The Japanese government approved the increase by cabinet order on 19 June 2026. It is the first revision of visa issuance fees in 48 years, since 1978.
Can I avoid the higher Japan visa fee?
Yes — if you apply before 1 July 2026, your application is charged the current lower fee. From 1 July 2026 onward, the new fee applies to all new applications.
