- Macedonian Denar (MKD)
The Macedonian Denar (MKD) is the sole legal tender of the Republic of North Macedonia. The National Bank of the Republic of North Macedonia (NBRNM) operates a de-facto-fixed exchange-rate regime: MKD has been pegged to the euro at approximately 1 EUR = 61.3644 MKD within a ±1% band since January 2002 (previously pegged to the Deutsche Mark from October 1995). The peg is maintained through NBRNM foreign-exchange intervention rather than a statutory currency-board arrangement, so the mechanism is structurally distinct from currency-board regimes elsewhere in the region. The Republic of North Macedonia is an EU candidate (candidate status December 2005; accession negotiations opened July 2022), NOT a Eurozone member, and NOT an EU member. Euro cash is widely accepted in tourism areas (hotels, larger restaurants, tour operators) thanks to the long-standing peg, but the denar remains the primary cash currency for taxis, kiosks, public transport, smaller vendors and most transactions outside major urban centres. UAE travellers should check the current AED–MKD rate via their UAE bank or an in-country licensed exchange on arrival; MKD is not a heavily-traded currency in the UAE. Cash exchange is widely available at Skopje International Airport arrivals, licensed exchange offices (menuvačnica) across Skopje, Ohrid, Bitola and Tetovo, and major hotels. Visa and Mastercard cards issued by UAE banks are accepted at larger hotels, restaurants and shops in Skopje and other major cities; contactless payment is increasingly common in larger establishments. Carry small MKD cash for taxis, kiosks, public transport and smaller vendors.
- eSIM available?
- Yes
Airalo offers North Macedonia eSIM plans at airalo.com/north-macedonia-esim (Airalo, May 2026). UAE travellers combining North Macedonia with other European destinations on a single trip can alternatively use Airalo’s Europe regional eSIM ("Eurolink"), which covers multiple European networks under one plan. Physical prepaid SIMs from A1 Makedonija and MTel Macedonia (the two major operators in the Republic of North Macedonia) are sold at Skopje International Airport arrivals as a backup option — a passport is required for SIM registration under North Macedonian telecommunications law. The two local operators are mentioned as alternatives only; OraVisa does not endorse a specific provider.

For UAE residents on non-Emirati passports
Republic of North Macedonia visa requirements for UAE residents depend on passport nationality, not on UAE residency. UAE Emirati nationals enjoy visa-free entry to the Republic of North Macedonia for up to 90 days within any 180-day period under a standing bilateral arrangement (ordinary passports); a supplementary Mutual Exemption MOU signed on 17 March 2023 by H.E. Faisal Lutfi (UAE Assistant Undersecretary for Consular Affairs) and H.E. Abdulqader Memedi (Ambassador of the Republic of North Macedonia to the UAE) additionally covers UAE diplomatic and special passport holders. The Republic of North Macedonia is an EU candidate state (candidate status granted December 2005; accession negotiations opened July 2022) but is NOT an EU member and NOT a Schengen Area member; it operates its own bilateral visa regime, separate from the Schengen Annex I/II framework. The following guidance covers the top UAE expat demographics; passport nationalities not listed should verify their category with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of North Macedonia before travel.
Visa-free for up to 90 days (within any 180-day period): Holders of British (United Kingdom), American (United States), Canadian and Australian passports enter the Republic of North Macedonia visa-free for stays up to 90 days under the standing bilateral visa regime. Conditions at the border: passport valid for at least the duration of the stay (a 3- to 6-month onward validity buffer is recommended), a confirmed return or onward travel itinerary, and proof of accommodation in the Republic of North Macedonia.
Per-passport-type asymmetry — Indian passport holders: Indian diplomatic passport holders may enter the Republic of North Macedonia visa-free (diplomatic-only asymmetry per the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of North Macedonia and Wikipedia "Visa policy of North Macedonia" non-ordinary passports section). Indian ordinary and official/service passport holders require a pre-arrival visa. Most UAE-resident Indian nationals hold ordinary passports and therefore fall in the pre-arrival visa route described below.
Pre-arrival visa required — apply before travel: Holders of Indian ordinary, Pakistani (ALL passport types — see cluster note below), Filipino (ALL passport types — see cluster note below), Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan, Egyptian (ALL passport types — see cluster note below), Jordanian (ALL passport types — see cluster note below) and Nepalese passports require a pre-arrival North Macedonian visa. Applications are submitted to the nearest diplomatic mission of the Republic of North Macedonia accepting applications from UAE residents; consult the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of North Macedonia visa-requirements portal for the current intake channel. Standard supporting documents include a passport valid at least 6 months beyond intended entry with at least 2 blank pages, a recent passport-style photograph, proof of UAE residency (Emirates ID + residence visa), confirmed return or onward ticket, hotel booking or local host details, travel medical insurance and proof of financial means. Apply well ahead of travel.
Note on cluster variance: Egyptian, Jordanian, Pakistani, and Filipino diplomatic and official-service passport holders enjoy visa-free entry to several other Schengen-aspirant destinations (e.g., Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina for Egyptian/Jordanian/Pakistani; Albania for Egyptian/Jordanian/Filipino diplomatic asymmetries). They do NOT enjoy visa-free entry to the Republic of North Macedonia for any of these passport types — the Republic of North Macedonia requires a pre-arrival visa for all Egyptian, Jordanian, Pakistani, and Filipino passport types per the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of North Macedonia primary source. Per-passport-type asymmetries are determined bilaterally and per-destination; UAE residents on these passports should verify their specific passport-type category against the Republic of North Macedonia MFA list before travel.
Special provision — multiple-entry Schengen visa OR EU residence permit holders: UAE residents on any passport nationality who hold a valid Type C multiple-entry Schengen visa, OR a valid temporary or permanent residence permit issued by an EU Member State or Schengen signatory, may enter the Republic of North Macedonia visa-free for up to 15 days. The underlying visa or permit must remain valid for the entire stay.
Temporary 2026 extension (1 January 2026 – 31 December 2026): During the 2026 calendar year, the Republic of North Macedonia has temporarily extended this provision to also cover holders of valid US, UK, or Canada visas — these visa holders may enter the Republic of North Macedonia visa-free for up to 15 days during 2026 under the same conditions. This extension is calendar-bound and expires on 31 December 2026; travellers entering on or after 1 January 2027 should verify whether the extension has been renewed via the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of North Macedonia.
UAE residence permit alone does NOT qualify for this provision — only the listed visa or permit types qualify. Cluster note for Western Balkans itineraries: the Republic of North Macedonia 15-day duration is the shortest in the 5-destination Schengen-aspirant cluster split (Montenegro 30 days / Serbia 90 days / Bosnia and Herzegovina 30 days with multiple-entry qualifier / Albania 90 days with multiple-entry-AND-previously-used qualifiers / Republic of North Macedonia 15 days with multiple-entry qualifier + 2026 temporary US/UK/Canada visa-holder extension). UAE residents planning a multi-country Western Balkans trip should verify the per-destination duration AND qualifier conditions separately.
Other passport nationalities not listed above should consult the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of North Macedonia visa-requirements portal at https://www.mfa.gov.mk/en/page/432/visa-requirements-for-entering-the-republic-of-north-macedonia before booking travel.
