Here is what to expect when you arrive at the VFS Global Portugal centre in Dubai for your appointment.

1. 1Security check — you will pass through a security screening at the entrance. Large bags may need to be stored.

3. 3Waiting area — take a seat and wait for your number to be called. Wait times vary from 10-45 minutes depending on how busy the centre is.

Biometric data (fingerprints and a digital photograph) is a mandatory requirement for all Schengen visa applications. Your biometrics are stored in the Visa Information System (VIS) for 5 years.

• Fingerprints — all 10 fingers are scanned digitally. If you have cuts or bandages on your fingers, let the officer know.
• Digital photograph — a photo is taken at the centre. This is in addition to the passport photos you submit.
• Children under 12 — are exempt from fingerprint capture but still need the digital photograph.
