Colombia’s rule for Chinese nationals is a two-step test, and you have to run both steps to know your real answer. Step one is about your passport; step two is about the conditional exemption, which depends on whether you hold a qualifying US or Schengen document.

Colombia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (the Cancillería) grants a conditional visa exemption to eight nationalities — Cambodia, India, Nicaragua, Myanmar, China, Thailand, Taiwan and Vietnam. For a Chinese national, it means that if you prove at the time of arrival that you hold a permanent residence permit, or a visa valid for at least 180 days, issued by the United States or any Schengen-area country, you can enter Colombia without applying for a Colombian visa and stay up to 90 days. Four traps catch travellers most often, and all four are easy to get wrong. First, the United Kingdom is not part of this rule at all — a UK visa or UK residence permit does NOT let you into Colombia visa-free. Second, your UAE residence visa does not help here — only a US or Schengen document qualifies. Third, the residence permit has to be permanent: a temporary residence card from a Schengen country or the US does not count. Fourth, the visa has to be valid for at least 180 days at the moment you arrive — so a visa close to expiry, or a short-validity or transit visa, will not satisfy the rule even if it is technically valid. • Assuming a UK visa works — it does not. Colombia’s conditional exemption covers only US and Schengen documents, so a UK visa or UK residence permit will not get a Chinese national into Colombia visa-free.
• Assuming a UAE residence visa is enough — it is not. Your Emirates ID and residence visa do not grant the exemption; only a US or Schengen document does.
• Relying on a temporary residence card or a near-expiry visa — the residence permit must be permanent, and a visa must be valid at least 180 days at arrival. Check the remaining validity before you book flights.
• Submitting Chinese-only documents — the Cancillería reviews in Spanish, so provide a Spanish or English translation of any Chinese-language bank statement, employment letter, or certificate.
• Skipping Check-Mig, or using a look-alike paid site — Check-Mig is a free, mandatory online migration form for ALL air travellers (including the visa-free), filed only on the official migracioncolombia.gov.co portal, between 1 and 72 hours before each flight, arriving and departing.
• Overlooking yellow fever for national parks — following a 2024–2025 outbreak, Colombia requires proof of yellow fever vaccination to enter parks such as Tayrona, the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, and Amazon reserves; get vaccinated at least 10 days before. It is not needed for city-only trips (Bogotá, Medellín, Cartagena).
